Homecoming means more than a celebration, but What does Lincoln University mean to you?

Homecoming means a lot to me, especially as a student at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, the first degree-granting Historically Black College and University (HBCU). This year is even more special because Lincoln celebrated its 100th centennial Homecoming. To me, homecoming is more than a celebration. It is a time to appreciate the people who came before us, recognize the history they created, and celebrate the opportunities they helped make possible for current students. It is a reminder that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

As I looked around campus during homecoming, I saw people coming together to celebrate their school, reconnect with old friends, and create new memories. Alumni returned to the place where their journeys began, while current students got to experience the traditions that make Lincoln special. Seeing so many people show love for the university reminds me that being a Lincoln Lion is something to be proud of. Homecoming brings people from different generations together and shows that the connection to Lincoln does not end when someone graduates.

For me, homecoming also came with a bittersweet feeling. This was my last homecoming as an undergraduate student, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated, and a member of the men’s basketball team. It is hard to believe that my college experience is getting closer to the finish line. When I transferred to Lincoln from a predominantly white institution (PWI), I experienced a different feeling on campus. At Lincoln, I found a place where I felt at home, surrounded by brothers and sisters who share a unique connection. I have created genuine friendships and built bonds that I believe will last a lifetime. Those relationships have made my college experience meaningful, and they are some of the things I will remember long after I leave campus.

One thing I love about Lincoln’s Homecoming is how it makes people feel included. Whether someone is a student, an alumnus, a member of a Greek organization, or a visitor, there is an excitement in the air that brings people together. Everyone has a chance to show school pride, support their organizations, and enjoy the culture that makes Lincoln unique. Homecoming reminds me that a university is not just classrooms, assignments, and athletic competitions. It is also about the people, traditions, and experiences that help shape who we become.

However, it is impossible for me to discuss Lincoln’s homecoming without remembering last year’s unfortunate shooting. What should have been a time of happiness became a frightening experience for many people on campus. I remember the chaos, the screams, and the sight of people running for their lives. People were falling and rushing away from the danger, unsure of what was happening around them. Those moments were traumatic, and the experience changed how many students viewed homecoming.

What makes the situation even more upsetting to me is that the violence was reportedly caused by people visiting campus rather than Lincoln students. Yet, the consequences have continued to affect the student experience, including restrictions on how many people can come to campus. I understand why safety measures are necessary, but it is disappointing that students must adjust their traditions because of something so harmful. Students deserve to enjoy homecoming while feeling safe in the place they call home. We should never have to choose between celebrating our university and protecting our well-being.

Despite what happened last year, I believe Lincoln’s spirit remains strong. This year’s homecoming was enjoyable and there was plenty of excitement surrounding the biggest events of the weekend. Friday and Saturday are what many students were waiting for, especially the Greek Step Show and Yardfest. These events bring energy, culture, music, and school pride to campus. By Saturday, students were dressed in their best outfits, organizations represented themselves, and friends gathered to enjoy the atmosphere. The excitement is about more than looking good or attending a popular event. It is about being together and creating memories that will last.

As I experienced my final undergraduate homecoming, I wanted to appreciate every moment. I know that one day I will return to Lincoln as an alumnus and look back on these experiences with pride. I hope future students will continue to enjoy the traditions that make this university special while also learning from the challenges of the past.

Homecoming means history, family, pride, and belonging to me. Lincoln has given me more than an education. It has given me friendships, memories, and a sense of community that I did not know I needed. As the university celebrated its 100th centennial homecoming, I was reminded that we were not just celebrating a weekend. We were celebrating the people who built this institution, the students who carry its legacy today, and the generations who will continue it tomorrow. That is what makes homecoming at Lincoln University truly special.
