Lincoln University, PA—While wars, politics, and real-world crises unfold, millions of people are more focused on viral songs and memes than the issues shaping their lives. “In the Navy” by Village People has recently gone viral amid discussions about war and the lingering idea that Gen Z might be drafted into the military.
While the song is meant to mock military propaganda, it ironically does the opposite by drawing massive public attention and spreading quickly across social media. Instead of encouraging critical thinking about real-world issues, it becomes entertainment. As a result, serious topics like war are turned into trends, showing how easily music and memes can distract people from reality.

This song distracts people due to its repetitive phrase “they want you” and its overall old-school rhythm. And with TikTok being the main source of repetitive sounds that become catchy, Gen Z soaks it up rather fast and blindly. Because there is a lot of war going on and issues taking place overseas, serious problems like war are reduced to songs to mellow everything out.
People also assume that the government is behind such causes and distractions to keep us warranted. And though that could be true, such claims cannot be confirmed or denied. However, the importance remains the same: behind every trendy song and funny meme is a real-world issue that needs our attention.
With all of this said, though, they still “want you.” So, will you be the one?
