Throughout the event, Martin engaged in a panel talk with Lincoln’s President, Brenda
Allen, a current student Drake Smith and Dr. Kaeleboga Maphunye, a visiting Fulbright Scholar.
He invited them to discuss the disconnect as to why they believe students don’t participate in
voting, while also hearing their strategies as to how they’re fixing the issue. A key highlight of
the evening was Martin’s emphasis on the importance of education and media literacy. He urged
students to critically evaluate the information they consume and to use their voices to challenge
misinformation. “You have the power to change the narrative,” he said, motivating attendees to
leverage social media platforms for advocacy.
Martin’s candid responses provided valuable guidance, inspiring many to pursue their
passions in service of their communities. Lincoln University’s administration expressed gratitude
for Martin’s visit. The event not only highlighted pressing social issues but also reaffirmed the
importance of youth involvement in shaping a better future. In a time of political polarization, Roland Martin’s visit to Lincoln University served as a reminder of the power of education and community engagement.
