Introduction
As a graduating senior, there’s no better feeling than watching our campus transform for homecoming weekend. The quiet pathways I walk every day suddenly come alive with alumni, vendors, music, and laughter a mix of familiar faces and new ones united by a shared legacy and connection. For one weekend, I get to see the full scope of what it means to be part of an HBCU more importantly being a part of the first HBCU: the pride, the joy, and the deep connections that span generations. It’s like stepping into a family reunion where the love for our school is the heartbeat, and this year’s homecoming reminded me why this place is so much more than a school, it’s a community and a legacy I’m proud to be a part of.
Capturing the Atmosphere
Homecoming at Lincoln is not just a reunion; it’s a journey, a reminder of history and heritage. Every corner of campus was alive with color, music, and joy, where Black excellence is celebrated unapologetically and profoundly. This year was no different, but the turnout was the largest I’ve seen since attending Lincoln, with alumni, students, and supporters filling every inch of campus. The energy was electric, and the vibes were unforgettable proof that Lincoln’s legacy is as vibrant as ever and only growing stronger.
Entertainment Highlights
The festivities kicked off on Wednesday with the community stage, where all our campus clubs such as Onyx, Inferno, and Wicked showcased fierce dance moves, the step team Reconstruction showcased unity, precision, and confidence, while our fashion orgs, PUMP Legacy, We Are 1, and Ziana showcased their luxurious fashion, unique aesthetics, and themes through well-coordinated shows. The models walked in unison and added sophistication and professionalism to the show.
On Thursday, rapper Rob49 lit up the stage with an unforgettable performance that had the ICC rocking. Friday featured our Divine 9 Organizations in an impressive step show, with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated taking home the victory. Saturday brought the excitement of the homecoming game. This year, the marching band took things to another level, delivering a halftime show that was as precise as it was powerful. The dancers moved with an intensity that echoed pride, the football team fought hard to secure the homecoming win, and the alumni roared with approval. All these amazing events contributed to a successful yard fest.
Reflection on Tradition and Legacy
Homecoming is always a memorable week for me; it’s the unity between alumni and current students that truly warms my heart. Seeing the alumni continue to back us and pour into the student body—even if Lincoln has, at times, let them down—reminds me of their deep understanding and empathy. They’ve been in our shoes, feeling the uncertainty of life as an undergrad, unsure of the next steps. Being at Homecoming reminds me why we hold so tightly to these traditions: it’s a time to look back with gratitude and forward with hope—a moment to honor the generations who built this legacy and to ensure it flourishes for those yet to come.
Constructive Criticism and Areas for Improvement
Despite the magic of Homecoming, there were a few logistical hiccups—like long lines at certain events and the occasional fight breaking out, some may say that these things occur due to outside guests while others feel that these feelings have been brewing on campus for a while which resulted in these actions occurring. Many attendees shared similar concerns, noting that most parties were held indoors and in the same area. Some felt that we could benefit from hosting more outdoor events and utilizing different spaces on campus to avoid crowding in one place. Others suggested adding more food vendors with diverse options beyond traditional soul food. With these small adjustments, next year’s celebration could be even more seamless and enjoyable, enhancing the unity and support that make Homecoming so memorable for alumni and current students.
Conclusion
Overall, Homecoming was very enjoyable, and I’d rate the week a solid 7.8 out of 10. I’m excited to see what Spring Fling will bring! Homecoming is more than just an event; it’s a powerful reminder of who we are and where we come from. It’s about celebrating Black joy, resilience, and success—a tradition passed down with pride, knowing it will continue to thrive long after us.
