AKA 2025 New Member Presentation at Lincoln University: Tradition & Transformation

By Amari Romney

The moment everyone had been waiting for came on March 22, 2025,
when Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) held its new member presentation at Lincoln
University of Pennsylvania. The ceremony, which welcomed the new members into the Epsilon
Nu Chapter (founded 1969), was a celebration of sisterhood and showed the enduring need for
Black Greek-letter organizations on college campuses. A production brought forth by The
Significant SIGMA ZETA OMEGA Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

The Lasting Impact of Brotherhood Societies

A century ago, the partner article that looked at the future of fraternities and sororities,
“Fraternities and Their Future” (Lincoln News, 1925), addressed the right roles such
organizations should play in bringing about unity, scholarship, and social life. As the article
noted, fraternities were created out of a humanitarian need for association and seeking protection
against an environment deemed hostile and paternalistic, evolving from the ancient guilds and
even castes toward the “modern” collegiate brotherhoods and sisterhoods. Essentially, the article
upheld the importance of these associations, while specifically saying they are dedicated to
scholarship, ethics and service. For modern representations of these principles, we look no
further than the 2025 Alpha Kappa Alpha new member presentation at Lincoln University for the
Epsilon Nu Chapter. Established in 196. Known for its commitment to scholarship, service, and
the empowerment of the Black woman, AKA was the first historically Black sorority, founded in
1908 at Howard University.

Thinking on the Essence of Fraternity and Sorority Life Today

The 1920s article addressed concerns about exclusivity, favoritism, and the ethicality of behavior
of fraternity men, but in the end contended that fraternities had a greater impact on the moral
character and leadership of their members. There’s still talk about it today, but organizations like
AKA have had a notable rise in importance since then. The AKA new member presentation
served as both an introduction for the women joining the organization and a visible declaration of
enduring values. The sorority demonstrated their commitment to community service initiatives as
well as educational superiority and cultural understanding. Modern sororities focus on social
justice initiatives alongside professional growth and community betterment, which were not as
pronounced in historical Greek organization discussions.

The Future of Greek Life at HBCUs

“Fraternities and Their Future” describes how early 20th-century Greek organizations focused
mainly on intellectual fellowship and moral duties. Greek organizations still maintain their
foundational principles, yet face new challenges and opportunities today. The presence of AKA
at Lincoln University shows how these organizations remain vital at historically Black colleges
and universities (HBCUs) for developing leadership abilities and cultural pride alongside service
initiatives. The AKA new member presentation demonstrates how the core principles established
a hundred years ago have paved the way for the dynamic and meaningful existence of sororities
in today’s world. Despite continuing debates about elitism and ethical challenges, organizations
like AKA have made critical contributions to educational institutions and society which
underscore their essential role. The past article encouraged readers to value fraternity life while
modern times demonstrate their enduring success through adaptation to contemporary demands
without abandoning their core values.
