SACNAS REACHES LU CAMPUS

by Jamila Jacob   One of the greatest elements of college and campus life is the opportunity for holistic student development within all programs and fields across an institution. This academic year, the Lincoln University campus has seen the formation of a new organization, the SACNAS chapter. The chapter, whose acronym stands for Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), has been introduced to the campus to give underrepresented STEM students the chance to maximize their college careers through various activities.    These include leadership programs, and the annual National Diversity in STEM Conference. In fact, it was through this conference in October of 2017, that Lincoln STEM student Bria Garcia was encoura...

Study Abroad: Attaining a wider perspective

by Jamila Jacob   The ability to travel, both domestically and internationally, is one of the greatest privileges a human could have. Traveling, especially internationally is one of the most sought after and costliest leisure activities to exist. A great benefit to attending college, apart from having access to higher education, is having study abroad opportunities at one’s disposal. In fact, many students’ first travel experience might have been through a study abroad program at their institution. At Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, though a relatively small institution, there are countless opportunities to travel abroad to pursue college courses. Students have been to a variety of continents where they have visited countries like South Africa, Kenya, Spain, China, Ir...

First Male Initiative Session Held At LU

Tamia Coleman The weekend of March 23rd to March 25th, Jonathan Harris of Residence Life hosted the first annual “Lincoln University: Male Initiative.” The purpose of this initiative was to bring African American males together from the cities surrounding our campus that are either juniors or seniors in high school. They were assigned a host that resides in the all-freshman male dorm, McRary Hall. Their weekend consisted of different activities that aimed to mold them into college students and great men that are prepared to take on the real world. The students were even given the opportunity to learn many basic but practical skills, including how to change car tires. They also dined in the cafeteria with current students of the university, attended a party hosted by “People Standing Uni...

Kinoia Fredericksen

My name is Kinoia Fredericksen and I am a current junior at Lincoln University double majoring in Strategic Mass Communications and Political Science. I was gracious enough this year to be a part of a study abroad program that will allow me and several classmates to immerse in Jamaican life and culture. I have spent my entire life in the St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands where I was able to be exposed to travel at an early age. This fueled my dreams of traveling to European countries such as Germany, Denmark, and Greece. Ever since I had the ability to board an airplane I have been able to leave my island and explore other states and Caribbean islands. As a child, I would often take family vacations to Orlando, FL or Tampa, FL where I was able to experience water parks and ...

Destiny Williams

Hello, My name is Destiny Williams, I am a freshman here at Lincoln University, pursuing a degree in Mass Communications and Business Management and here is my travel biography. To begin, I would like to call myself an inexperienced traveler. The idea of traveling to different places excites me. However, I am yet to travel outside of the country or to many other regions of the country besides the south. So far, I have explored Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. Although I have only traveled to these locations so far, I plan to explore more of the world and to become more culturally diverse in the years to come.  I have goals set to travel to New York, California, Puerto Rico, Dubai, France, London, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. I am...

Avyanna King

Avyanna King Places I’ve been: I have a very short “previously traveled” list but to name a few I have been to Houston,TX, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Orlando, Florida. Places I would like to go to: Honestly, with such little travel experience under my belt, I would love to go just about ANYWHERE, but for the sake of this article I would name Australia, Barcelona, and Jamaica as my top three travel destinations that I hope to visit in my near future. Why Jamaica for study Abroad? Jamaica is somewhere I have wanted to visit since I was little girl. I would hear stories from friends and family who have actually been there. They would always tell me about how beautiful it is, not only visual imagery, but about the beauty in the culture and the people as well. The experience of getti...

Brianna Williams

My name is Brianna Williams and I am a 21 year old Philadelphia native. Unlike many people where I come from, I have done a lot of traveling. As a child, my parents made it their priority to make sure that I was exposed to places other than Philadelphia. Starting from when I was 6, we traveled up and down the east coast every year. My first trip was to Disney world in Orlando, Florida. We drove 15 hours there and of course we took a few tourists stops along the way. We stayed at this amazing condo for about a week while we visited various amusement parks and landmarks. The next year my mother decided to take us back so that I could finally experience the “big kid” rides and I was so excited! This time we only stayed there for 4 days. My next trip was to Virginia, where we visited Busch Gar...

Zelda Glenmore

My name is Zelda Glenmore and I hail from the nation’s capital, Washington, DC.  As a child growing up, I spent a lot of time taking road trips with my family.   A lot of the memories that I have with my cousins growing up are of us visiting family in Virginia and North and South Carolina. Every summer especially, we would load up my grandfather’s old van and head to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  It was something like a family tradition for everyone to travel together. We would stay at cheap hotels and eat all types of unhealthy foods. As my family traveled from Washington, DC to South Carolina, we would make mini stops along the way. It was during these times that I learned the importance and significance of traveling and meeting new people. It was then that I learned ...

Quinton Davis

My name is Quinton Davis, a 23 year old senior at Lincoln University. Growing up my mother loved to travel and take trips yearly to show my brother and me a different experience. Coming from West Philadelphia, I know that many children do not have the opportunity to visit places outside of Philadelphia. I was truly blessed to visit over 30 places throughout my life. When I was about the age of 6, as I can remember, Florida was my first official trip that I enjoyed and remember. My mother took my brother and me along with a couple other family members. It was the best experience of my life because it was something different that I never saw. My family and I went to Universal Studios, Disney World, Jurassic Park and other amusement parks. As a child, it was the coolest thing to eat candy, po...
