What is “swag?”

To Fonzworth Bentley, who spoke to a packed crowd of students and faculty Tuesday night in the International Cultural Center, “swag” is the combination of manners, confidence and style.

Bentley, who was born Derrick Watkins, is an entrepreneur, actor, author and a musician. Bentley was born in Atlanta and is a graduate of the prestigious Morehouse College. He moved to New York City with no connections in the entertainment industry, but two years later, he managed to become a personal assistant to Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Since then, Bentley has become a big name in the worlds of entertainment, acting and fashion.

Bentley spoke about the importance of maintaining manners, confidence and style throughout all aspects of life.

“Manners were essential to my upbringing and are important to always remember,” Bentley said. In doing this, you will meet some influential people, and doors will be opened to you.”

Bentley also gave tips to students on how to set long-term goals and succeed in their respective fields.

At the end of his speech, Bentley answered questions from students and took pictures with students. He gave away a few copies of his book, “Advance Your Swagger,” to a few students.

“His message was truly insightful and was necessary for any student to be successful,” said sophomore Samantha Fitzpatrick, who received a copy of Bentley’s book.
