Students Participate in NBC 10 Academy

By: Regan Farley–This year, Lincoln University along with NBC Philadelphia, Ross Associates, and the Philadelphia chapter of the National Black Public Relations Society hosted  “NBC 10 Academy.” Thirteen students from Lincoln’s Mass Communications Center of Excellence were selected to take part in the program.

The Academy first started as an idea between Mass Communications faculty, NBC 10’s Sales & Traffic Manager, Kathy Johnson, and Darisha Miller, Director of Media Relations at Ross Associates during the National Association of Black Journalist Conference this past summer.

But on Tuesday October 18, 2011, the once great idea between the media professionals became a reality for Lincoln University and its students.

Day one of the academy allowed students to interact with various media professionals from Executive Producers to the Director of Human Resources.

 Students were able to get their resumes reviewed by NBC Philadelphia Internship Coordinator Kimberly Cummings.

 Video reels and Lion Media produced television segments surfaced around the conference room and into the hands of many of the media professionals in attendance.

 At the video station students were given the chance to showcase their raw talent with various reels and standups.  Industry professionals gave insight on how students could fix minor issues with both editing and reporting stories.

 The first day ended with students taking a tour around the studio to see where NBC 10’s entertainment & lifestyle show “The 10 Show” gets recorded as well as the entire control room that operates the entire NBC 10 studio.

 Day of two of sessions took place on Thursday, October 27, with a warm welcome from NBC 10 Sales & Traffic Manager, Kathy Johnson and professional Image Consultant, Beth Strange.  

 “Show Us Your Best Pitch” a session that allowed each student to pitch a piece of work that they thought was most unique to the media professionals in two minutes.

 “I learned a lot from the pitching my story idea to the professionals and also learned how I could do better the next go around,” said Senior Brittany McCarthy.

 After the pitching was over, Strange coached the thirteen Lincolnites in various aspects of professional dress, interviewing techniques and business and social etiquette.

 At the end of the second day, the students walked away with a “The 10 Show” gift bags, business cards, and a reporter’s notebook for the many breaking news stories that they will uncover in media world.
