Michelle Obama is the Epitome of a First Lady

Averri Glenn

First Lady, Michelle Obama is leaving Melania Trump with big shoes to fill but an even bigger legacy to admire. When Barack Obama was first elected back in 2008, everyone wondered what type of first lady Michelle Obama would be, especially as the first African American woman to become the first lady of the United States. Would she be the stereotypical First Lady and invest her time in the décor or flower arrangements or would she do something more significant? There were a lot of questions about what exactly Michelle Obama would do. As you can imagine, being the First Lady to the President of the United States of America you are already under a microscope but being the first BLACK First Lady to the first BLACK President of the United States, there was a different type of microscope she was put under.

Recently Michelle Obama was featured on the cover of December’s Vogue. According to Cosmopolitan, she discusses the role she has played as First Lady to how she is feeling about leaving the White House. As Michelle’s reign as First Lady begins to end, we can only look back and admire just how much she has done for America. She used her time to make a difference and help not just America out where we really needed but the world. From hosting the recent United State Of Women summit to her Let Girls Learn initiative, the first lady has used her platform to effect real change for women.  To name some of her many accomplishments: “Let’s Move!” was launched to address the issue of childhood obesity by uniting community leaders, parents, educators, and many others. These efforts included healthier meals and more physical activities in schools. “Joining Forces” was launched with the help of Dr. Jill Biden to support service members and veterans through wellness and opportunities of employment. Her “Reach Higher” program surfaced to encourage the youth around the country to achieve their higher education by exposing them to college and career opportunities.

“Everything we do is by choice,” Obama said of what she’s accomplished as First Lady. “I could have spent eight years doing anything, and at some level, it would have been fine. I could have focused on flowers. I could have focused on decor. I could have focused on entertainment. Because any First Lady, rightfully, gets to define her role. There’s no legislative authority; you’re not elected. And that’s a wonderful gift of freedom.” Obama told Vogue magazine.

It is undeniably true that Michelle Obama is the epitome of pure First Lady excellence. So after all this, is it very clear that Melania Trump has big shoes to fill because of all Michelle Obama has done. President Obama told the magazine via email the reason Michelle’s become one of the most beloved First Ladies is because “they see themselves in her—a dedicated mom, a good friend, and someone who’s not afraid to poke a little fun at herself from time to time.” We will miss our dear First Lady Michelle Obama.
