My name is Madelynn Mitchell and I am from Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania. I am currently a Sophomore studying Mass Communications at the Lincoln University. I am very thankful for this opportunity to study abroad in Jamaica with my peers through my university’s Mass Communications department.
So far, I have been to sixteen cities, ten states , and two continents. The reasons varied. I attended a HBCU tour for spring break in high school. I went to a conference, landmarks, supported family on traveling sports teams, vacation, visited relatives ,and was invited on a cruise as a graduation gift.
Experiencing the warm climates and southern hospitality of Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, North and South Carolina were memorable. However, the ultimate traveling experience of mine was studying abroad for four weeks in Europe- Burgos, Spain to be exact. The layovers in London and Madrid were even noteworthy. “Don’t dream your life, live your dream,” this is a quote that my peers and I saw spray painted on a wall as we made our way through the streets of Burgos. It certainly resonated with me. Being there, I was so enthused to learn about the culture and language. I definitely learned a few things about myself my peers and the country’s cultural norm. For example, asking for separate checks is frowned upon in Spain.
This May, I look forward to expanding my world view and marking Jamaica off my travel bucket list. While I am there ,I will be producing as part of a team that will be documenting the experience of the group of LU students studying abroad in Jamaica. We will spend time exploring different locations in Jamaica including Ocho Rios, Kingston, Port Antonio, and Negril. For the first week I will be staying with my peers in a villa! What I’m most excited about in Jamaica is learning about their creole language, seeing the natural resources , and bonding with LU students who study Mass Communications.
