Concert Choir Performs in Happy Valley

By Jocelyn Haslon

The Lincoln University Concert Choir traveled to Happy Valley last week to perform at the 19th Annual African American Music Festival at Penn State University.

Lincoln University’s choir, conducted by Edryn Coleman, was joined by the Cheyney University Concert Choir on the afternoon of Jan. 31 in the Esber Recital Hall

Edryn Coleman conducted the Lincoln University Choir during this three-day festival in which they performed with The Cheyney University Concert Choir under the direction of Marques L. A. Garrett to present “United in Song”, a concert of choral music by African American composers. The choirs were accompanied by Toni Caldwell-Hall and M. Helen Meacham.

Songs performed included “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, “Hold Fast to Dreams” and “O Magnum Mysterium”.

Coleman was extremely proud of the choir.

“The concert choir is extremely dedicated to what they do and work hard to achieve their goals,” he said, “we go for it. We don’t do the easy stuff…and it pays off.”

Students, too, were proud of their choir.

“I think the choir has dedicated performers who are led by a master director,”  said Courtney Moss, a senior at Lincoln. “I believe that they are leaders at Lincoln for going to Penn State.”

“I’m proud of them because you can tell through their performances how much they work and that they enjoy what they’re doing,” Tiana Stevens, a freshman said.

Although membership is open to all students at the university through an audition process, the majority of the singers in the ensemble are undergraduate music majors.

The Concert Choir rehearses four times a week on vocal music with an emphasis on African American tradition. The choir gives several concerts each semester, and has achieved a reputation of excellence on the regional, state, and national level, according to the Lincoln University website.

The Lincoln University Choir will be performing in South Africa from April 15th through April 26th.
